How to get rid of silverfish in the bathroom

The bathroom is a silverfish paradise: steam from the shower, a damp floor and dark cabinets give them exactly the humidity and shelter they need. If you keep finding them in the tub, the sink or behind the toilet, the real fix is drying the room out and treating the cracks they hide in, all without spraying chemicals where you bathe.

Why the bathroom draws them

Silverfish are built for damp, and a bathroom holds moisture longer than any other room. They shelter in the gaps around pipes, under the vanity and behind loose tile grout, coming out at night to feed on the starches in toilet paper, tissue and even the glue in wallpaper. Lower the humidity and seal off those hideouts and the room stops being livable for them. (More on the how and why: How to get rid of silverfish and What you need to know about silverfish and earwigs.)

The non-toxic fix

Run the exhaust fan during and after showers and wipe standing water, since cutting the humidity does most of the work. Puff Dust to Dust with the Insect Buster into the gaps around pipes, under the vanity and along the baseboards where they shelter. For the ones you catch in the open, spray Six Feet Under on contact with plant-based active ingredients.

Dry the bathroom out

  • Vent the steam: run the fan during and after showers and fix any leaks under the sink.
  • Treat the gaps: puff Dust to Dust around pipes, under the vanity and along baseboards.
  • Hit what you see: spray Six Feet Under on contact for silverfish in the open.
  • Seal the paper: keep spare toilet paper and tissue in a closed cabinet, not on the floor.
