How to protect cashmere from moths | Non-toxic

Cashmere is a clothing moth's idea of a delicacy. It is an ultra-fine animal fiber, soft, warm and pure keratin, which is exactly what the larvae feed on. Because a good cashmere piece is an investment, it is worth a little extra care to keep moths away. Here is how to protect it, the non-toxic way.

Why moths love cashmere

The same softness that makes cashmere feel luxurious makes it easy for moth larvae to chew. Like all clothing moths, they are drawn to fibers carrying body oils, sweat or a trace of food, so a cashmere sweater worn a few times and folded away unwashed is a prime target. The adults are secretive and lay their eggs in dark, undisturbed drawers, and the larvae feed quietly in the folds until small holes appear. How to protect your cashmere the non-toxic way

Always clean cashmere before you store it, by gentle hand wash or dry cleaning, since stored soil is what draws moths in. Fold it rather than hang it so it holds its shape. Keep it in a breathable box or bag rather than airtight plastic, since cashmere needs air and sealed plastic can trap moisture and cause mildew. Set Cedar Planks or a Cedar Chips canister near it but not touching, to repel moths, refreshed with Cedar Ward as the scent fades. Hang a Clothing Moth Trap nearby to catch the males and flag any activity early. If you suspect a piece has eggs or larvae, seal it in a bag and freeze it at 0°F for about two weeks to kill them without harsh chemicals.

• Never store it dirty: hand wash or dry clean before putting cashmere away.
• Fold, do not seal airtight: store folded in a breathable box or bag, not airtight plastic, with Cedar Planks or Cedar Chips set nearby, refreshed by Cedar Ward.

• Treat the doubtful: freeze a suspect piece at 0°F for about two weeks to kill eggs and larvae.
