Fruit flies commonly breed on over-ripe fruit and other produce, as they are attracted to processes associated with fermentation. In the fermentation process, yeast acts on sugars, producing alcohols and CO2, and these by-products are what fruit flies have been found to be attracted to.

Vinegar is a key ingredient in Sweet Surrender, using a specialized fermentation process with grapes from California. With the results from well over a year of testing, Dr. Killigan’s found these specially fermented grapes consistently outperformed other attractants, logging up to 10x the catch rates to competitor formulas. Plant-based sodium lauryl sulfate changes the surface tension of the formula and when fruit flies attempt to feed on it, they end up drowning instead of being able to remain on the surface of the formula.
